Cedar Breaks Snow Shoeing

Nathan and I decided to go snow shoeing with our ward in January. We started our hike at the gate across the road near Brian Head. We started out strong with 20 plus individuals from the ward. The first to drop out were the weak young men that would rather be at home playing video games. Next it was the weak un-prepared, who were freezing. Lastly we made it to the Cedar Breaks Overlook on the far North side of the Park. We took a picture of those who made it that far, which included Nathan. When we started this adventure, we had made a goal to eat lunch in the Cedar Breaks Yurt. The next thing I know three more have dropped out, including Nathan (who needed to get some homework done for school) That's okay Nathan, school work is necessary especially when you are taking near college courses. So my friend Brian and I, (who neither of us wanted to show weakness to each other decided to go on.) We said to ourselves after climbing a long hill, "If it isn't here at the top of the hill we will be turning around." Soon after that we came to a clearing where we could see another stretch of snow that looked about 2 miles long. It should be mentioned as shown in the pictures that we started out in un-tracked snow which is harder to walk in. By this time some snow machines had come and made some tracks that we could follow. Not wanting to back down Brian and I forced ourselves to continue. Finally at the end of this jaunt we were there. At the Yurt they served us free hot chocolate and let us enjoy the fire and eat our lunch of peanut butter sandwiches, sardines, crackers, cookies and water. While there at the Yurt a snow cat came grooming the trail, making it 100% easier to walk. By the time we got back to the truck we were almost sunburned and ready to collapse. As far as we can see we snow shoed in and out almost logging in 10 miles.

  1. John you failed to mention that you carried me and my 89 lbs pack for almost three quarters of a mile (up hill) while being chased by mountain lions. If it wasn't for your bravery John, the bread winner of the Joneses Clan would have been lost in the depths of the snow drifts! Thanks Brother!
